Auckland’s Shakespeare in the Park 22nd Season

Become part of a long standing tradition.

Expressions of Interest to direct a play for the Auckland Shakespeare in the Park 2018 season.

Auckland Shakespeare in the Park presented by Shoreside Theatre will be in its third decade in 2018 and we are on the hunt for expressions of interest from directors. This is a prestigious and well-attended event, and therefore we are looking for passionate people with prior experience in directing and an understanding of the Shakespearean language.

Shakespeare in the Park has been performed mainly in repertory for the last twenty-one years, and to continue this tradition the committee requires submissions where two plays can be chosen which work well with each other and offer a contrast (e.g. a Comedy or Romance alternating  with a Tragedy or History play.  We prefer to have two separate casts without doubling up but doubling within a play is acceptable.

With a four-week season it is important that actors and crew members have “days off” as most also have daytime jobs. The season will be staged outside in the Pumphouse Ampitheatre from mid-January 2018 for a four or five week season. We require it to be performed  tradionally (with costumes to suit) and the plays presented in the period and country of the original setting. We therefore will not consider modern staging, adaptations or stylisation to this ‘genuine Shakespeare’ ambition and your acceptance of these conditions will be necessary.

Puritanical insistence on male actors only being on stage is not adhered to though !

Expressions of interest should include:

– Your preferred play, and your reasons for choosing it.

– Any initial ideas about the presentation of the play you have, e.g. set requirements, doubling of cast members, etc

–  Drawings of the proposed set so our committee may interpret its practicality and financial  feasibility. (Proposed colour themes will need to be approved by the wardrobe mistress).

– Your experience in theatre, particularly as a director.

We recommend familiarisation with the PumpHouse Amphitheatre venue in advance. Another tradition which we prefer to retain has been the utilisation of three stage areas and Shoreside has invested funds to ensure this feature is retained.

As a community theatre group we work within a limited budget and all hands are on deck from everyone involved in a Shakespeare season – this includes actors, stage managers and  directors. So, we would also like to know what you can bring to the table, e.g. if you have a stage manager you have previously worked with and would wish to do so again or you are a fantastic set painter please let us know as we welcome such talents to Shoreside.

The final selection of plays to be performed rests with the Shoreside Committee. Auckland Shakespeare in the Park after twenty-one years is an established brand with a loyal audience but nonetheless new patrons are always attracted to ‘real Shakespeare’.

Please send expressions of interest and/or requests for more information to by 30 April 2017.
